There have been two Lee Travis, Jill Carlyle(technically three with Albert Elwood making a single appearance in 1963, and was only on earth 2) to take the mantle of the Crimson Avenger.

The first ,Lee Travis, from New York.  He had no powers, and was first seen in Detective comics #20 in 1938.  He is considered the first costumed hero of the Golden Age.  He first donned the disguised on the eve of the War of the Worlds radio broadcast in 1938. His civilian identity is a crusading young publisher of a newspaper the Daily Globe-Leader.  He had a sidekick, Wing, who was also his valet. CA also help the first Sandman start his hero career.  During WWII Crimson Avenger abandoned the red trenchcoat, fedora, and red mask for a new costume when he joined the Seven Soldiers.  At this point superheroes were more popular than the costumed vigilantes, so his costume changed to be a more superhero look. Consisting of red tights, yellow boots, trunks and crest, and a “sun” symbol which was stated to be a stylized bullet hole.  He has traveled through time to see the Aztecs, and came back to the 20th century decades beyond the point he left, and discovered that he had a terminal disease.  But he went out on his own terms by steering a doomed cargo ship away from New York’s harbor to let it explode safely in open. A hero truly worth remembering, he was in a few episodes of Justice League Unlimited in the early 2000’s.  He was an expert in hand-to-hand combat and carried two gas pistols to subdue criminals.

The second Crimson Avenger is Jill Carlyle from Detroit, now seems to serve as a minor Spirit of Vengeance.  She went to purchase 1911 colts from a pawnshop, and the guns used to belong to Lee Travis and were cursed.  When she used them for vengeance they grafted themselves to her body.  Now she is an unwilling agent for the supernatural forces that cry out for the blood of sinners. As part of the curse an ever-bleeding bullet hole appears on her chest.  She can teleport, has intangibility, and her bullets never miss or need reloaded. Her bullets can penetrate anything.  They are even know to wound the invulnerable ones like Superman, and can crack the armored shell of Captain Atom.  This makes her feared by heros and villains alike.
