Jade, real name  Jennifer-Lynn Hayden, made her first appearance in All-Star Squadron in 1983.  She was the daughter of Alan Scott the Golden Age Green Lantern, and her twin brother is the hero Obsidian. Her father had a strong connection to the starheart energy, and his Power Ring was passed down to her, giving her a physical connection to the light.

She has all the powers of the Green Lantern Corps, and she has belonged to many different teams.  These teams include Infinity, Inc (Jade was a founding member along with her brother), both the Justice League and the Justice Society of America, and she was also part of the Outsiders.  Because of her father’s exposure to magical energies, Jade and her brother were born with metahuman powers.  Jade’s powers manifested themselves when she was defending herself from a sexual assault when she was a child.  She was able to generate constructs from the star-mark on her palm, and could fly.

Her powers were like her father’s.  She also shared his weakness to wood, but didn’t have a need to recharge.  For a short time she became the first female Green Lantern from earth.  She was given a power ring which gave her powers similar to her own, but required 24 hours of charging from her power battery and the ring had a weakness to yellow(the color of fear. While pursuing a career in photography she became romantically involved with Kyle Rayner (the fifth Green Lantern).  She died while trying to stop Alexander Luthor, Jr, and was resurrected in the Brightest day series.

An absolutely fantastic character.  Unfortunately, she wasn’t put into continuity for the new 52.  I guess they figured with making Alan Scott gay, and a bit younger, it would be better to just leave his twins out of it (so to speak).  But you never know they could come in somewhere down the line from an old relationship, when he was “confused”.

From what I understand, they made Alan Scott gay because they had decided to make him young and childless, which eliminated Obsidian who was one of their few gay superheroes.
